Non-fiction
As an author of non-fiction, you’ll want to get your message across clearly, succinctly and accurately. You won’t want to let a few typos or poorly placed punctuation marks damage your credibility or interfere with your readers’ enjoyment. Whether you’re writing for a general readership or a niche audience, you’ll want to ensure your work is not just logically structured but also eloquent and authoritative.
What can I do for your non-fiction manuscript?
I provide editing services at various stages of development for non-fiction manuscripts.
1. MANUSCRIPT ASSESSMENT
Maybe you’ve finished your first draft and you’d like some honest and constructive feedback. In this early stage, I can help you by providing a manuscript assessment. This is the the stage at which you might be wondering whether you’re on the right track with your manuscript; the stage at which you might like some ‘big picture’ feedback. In a manuscript assessment I will write a report that gives general feedback on aspects such as:
2. STRUCTURAL EDIT
Maybe you’d like someone to work through a draft of your manuscript with you more closely and advise you on how to improve on any of the aspects that need attention. This process is a structural edit. In this level editing I will write a report on the topics outlined in the section 'Manuscript Assessment' and give more specific advice on how to rectify the problems. A structural edit might mean a bit of to-ing and fro-ing to get your manuscript ready for a copyedit.
3. COPYEDIT
If you’ve already done multiple drafts and you’re pretty happy with the overall structure, you might be ready to have your work copyedited. If I copyedit your book, I will:
What if you don’t know which service you need?
No problem. Please send me a message and together we can work out how I can help you at your current stage.
Why choose me to edit your non-fiction work?
I’m an author of non-fiction myself, so I can understand your concerns. You’ve worked hard on this manuscript – maybe you’ve spent years researching – and you’re anxious to make it the absolute best it can be. I have experience in editing successful non-fiction books, and one of my own non-fiction books, Captain Thunderbolt, was shortlisted for an ABIA in 2015.
I understand your need for an editor who pays attention to detail and can communicate clearly and sensitively. If you’re a new author, I’m happy to talk you through the process and explain how it works at every step of the way.
How much will it cost?
The cost will depend on the type and length of the manuscript, its stage of development, and the level of service you require. Please contact me for a quote. When you’ve sent me a message, I’ll ask you to send a sample of your work (usually around 1000 words) so I can work out an accurate quote.

- Is the text broken up into chapters that are named and ordered appropriately?
- Are there any potential ethical or copyright issues that you might like to discuss with a lawyer? (Please note that I cannot give legal advice.)
- What is the best way to handle references, footnotes, endnotes, acknowledgements, index, table of contents, figures and tables?
- What is the potential market for your book?

Testimonials
'Jane was a pleasure to work with and guided me through the entire process [of editing my master's thesis] from start to finish. She provided meaningful insights and suggestions to ensure my writing clearly conveyed what I truly wanted to express. Her attention to detail was greatly appreciated and I wouldn't hesitate to work with her again in the future.'

'Throughout the entire process, I found Jane to be incredibly insightful, encouraging and professional. After spending several years working on my grandmother's memoirs, our final draft had already undergone frequent edits by friends and family.
The value in engaging Jane Smith’s editing services was that it offered a fresh and independent perspective of the memoirs. Jane not only significantly improved the quality and formatting of the text, but most importantly, she asked questions and sought clarification, which guided us to fill the gaps and silences in our text.
Deciding to engage Jane’s professional editing service has ensured my grandmother's memoirs are of the highest quality and standard, giving confidence that when we reflect in years to come, we will continue to be proud of the project.
I wholeheartedly recommend getting in touch with Jane to discuss your needs.
Like me, you will be glad you did!'
